First Lieutenant Berger was a forward observer with the 38th Field Artillery Battalion, 2nd Infantry Division. On July 26, 1951, while supporting the 38th Infantry Regiment's attack in the "Punchbowl" Area, his position was overrun by the enemy. He called for friendly fire on his position to destroy the enemy.
