Major Beyer was a member of the 20th Tactical Air Support Squadron, Chu Lai Air Base, South Vietnam. On July 30, 1968, he was the pilot of a Cessna Skymaster Observation Aircraft (O-2A) on a visual reconnaissance/forward air controller mission over South Vietnam. As he was proceeding to a point 20 miles west of Kham Duc, radio contact was lost. Major Beyer's remains have been recovered and identified. His name is permanently inscribed on the Courts of the Missing at the Honolulu Memorial.
