Corporal Bickell was awarded the Korean Service Medal, the United Nations Service Medal, the National Defense Service Medal, the Korean Presidential Unit Citation and the Republic of Korea War Service Medal.

Corporal Bickell was a member of Company B, 772nd Military Police Battalion, U.S. Army. On December 10, 1952, he was a security guard on a freight train going north. As the train passed through a tunnel about one mile north of Pusan, South Korea, he fell through an open door and suffered severe head injuries killing him.
