Corporal Birchfield was a member of Company F, 2nd Battalion, 23rd Infantry Regiment, 2nd Infantry Division. He was Killed in Action near Changnyong, South Korea while driving the enemy back to the Naktong River Line along the Pusan Perimeter on September 5, 1950.
