Captain Bird was a veteran of World War II. During the Korean War, he was a flight instructor at Williams Air Force Base, Arizona. On December 16, 1952, while flying in a T-6 training aircraft with a student his aircraft crashed at Rittenhouse Auxiliary Landing Field near Williams Air Force Base.
