Warrant Officer, First Class Black was a member of 11th Aviation Company, 1st Cavalry Division. On March 1, 1971, he was the aircraft commander of a Bell Iroquois Utility Helicopter (UH-1H) on a combat mission in Kampong Cham Province, Cambodia, when the aircraft received enemy fire, crashed and exploded. His remains were recovered on December 6, 1995 and identified on May 12, 2003. His name is permanently inscribed on the Courts of the Missing at the Honolulu Memorial.
