Lieutenant Colonel Blackwood was a member of the 333rd Tactical Fighter Squadron. On May 27, 1967, he was the pilot of a Thunderchief Fighter (F-105D) on a mission near Bac Giang, Ha Bac Province, North Vietnam, when he was shot down by hostile fire. His remains were recovered on April 27, 1989 and identified on November 17, 1989. His name is inscribed on the Courts of the Missing at the Honolulu Memorial.
