Staff Sergeant Blackwood was a member of Headquarters, 30th Weather Reconnaissance Squadron, 67th Tactical Reconnaissance Wing. On May 24, 1954, the aircraft in which he was flying crashed into a mountainside on Cheju-do Island, Korea, killing him.
