Captain Blankenship was a member of the 736th Bomber Squadron. On July 7, 1967, he was a member of the crew of a Boeing Stratofortress Bomber (B-52D) 20 miles offshore over the South China Sea, when it collided with another B-52D bomber. His remains were recovered on April 12, 1994 and identified on April 18, 1997. His name is inscribed on the Courts of the Missing at the Honolulu Memorial.
