Sergeant First Class Bookout was a member of Military Assistance Command Vietnam Studies and Observation Group, 5th Special Forces Group. On July 4, 1970, he was a squad leader conducting a reconnaissance mission near the border of Laos and South Vietnam, south of the A Shau, Saravane Province. He was killed during an ambush. His remains were not recovered. His name is inscribed on the Courts of the Missing at the Honolulu Memorial.
