Lieutenant Braaten was a veteran of World War II. In Korea, he was a pilot of a PBM-5S patrol bomber with Patrol Squadron 40, based in Okurokami, Japan. On June 15, 1951, on returning from a flight to Korea, his aircraft crashed into a mountain in Japan.
