Captain Brandt was a member of 101st Aviation Battalion, 101st Airborne Division. On March 18, 1971, he was the pilot of a Bell Cobra Attack Helicopter (AH-1G) covering the extraction of ARVN troops from Tchepone, Laos to Khe Sahn when his aircraft was hit by enemy fire, exploded and crashed killing him. His remains were recovered on January 13, 1990 and identified on July 17, 1990. His name is permanently inscribed on the Courts of the Missing at the Honolulu Memorial.
