Colonel Brownlee was a member of the 355th Tactical Fighter Squadron. On December 24, 1968, he was the pilot of a Thunderchief Fighter (F-105D) on a mission between Ban Phaphilang and Ban Karai Pass, Laos, where his aircraft was hit by hostile fire. He parachuted to the ground wounded and a helicopter tried unsuccessfully to rescue him. His remains were not recovered. His name is inscribed on the Courts of the Missing at the Honolulu Memorial.
