Specialist, Fifth Class Burgess was a member of Company B, 227th Aviation Battalion, 11th Aviation Group, 1st Cavalry Division (Airborne). On June 30, 1970, he was the crew chief of a Bell Iroquois Utility Helicopter (UH-1H) on a command and control mission near the Cambodia/South Vietnam border in Phuoc Long Province when it was hit by enemy fire crashed and burned killing him. His name is permanently inscribed on the Courts of the Missing at the Honolulu Memorial. SP5 Burgess' remains were recovered and identified.
