Corporal Butler was a member of Troop C, 1st Squadron, 9th Cavalry Regiment, 1st Cavalry Division. On July 14, 1969, he was the door gunner of a Bell Huey Utility Helicopter (UH-1B) on a night support mission 10 miles northeast of Ben Cat, Binh Duong Province, South Vietnam when it collided with an observation helicopter crashed and burned. His remains were not recovered. His name is inscribed on the Courts of the Missing at the Honolulu Memorial.
