Captain Campbell was a member of the 602nd Special Operations Squadron, Nakhom Phenom, Royal Thai Air Force Base. On March 1, 1969, he was the pilot of a Douglas Skyraider Attack Aircraft (A1-J) on a mission in northern Xiangkhoang Province, Laos, when his aircraft was shot down. His remains were recovered on April 8, 2009 and identified May 18, 2010. His name is permanently inscribed on the Courts of the Missing at the Honolulu Memorial.
