Captain Cartwright was a member of Attack Squadron 85, Carrier Air Wing 11 aboard the Aircraft Carrier USS KITTY HAWK (CVA-63). On December 22, 1965, he was the pilot of a Grumman Attack Aircraft Intruder (A-6A) on a strike mission about 30 miles northeast of Haiphong, North Vietnam when his aircraft was shot down. His remains were recovered on April 12, 1994 and identified on November 28, 1994. His name is inscribed on the Courts of the Missing at the Honolulu Memorial.
