First Lieutenant Cestare was a member of the Marine Observation Squadron 2, Marine Air Group 16, 1st Marine Air Wing. On April 20, 1968, he was the pilot of a Bell Iroquois Utility Helicopter (UH-1E) on a search and destroy mission over Da Nang, South Vietnam, when his aircraft crashed killing him. His remains were not recovered. His name is inscribed on the Courts of the Missing at the Honolulu Memorial.
