Captain Clay was a member of the Marine Attack Squadron 211, Marine Attack Group 12, 1st Marine Air Wing. On April 12, 1967, he was the pilot of a Douglas Attack Aircraft Skyhawk (A-4E) over Quang Tin Province, South Vietnam, when his aircraft crashed. His remains were recovered on June 6, 1995 and identified on February 19, 1997. His name is inscribed on the Courts of the Missing at the Honolulu Memorial.
