Captain Cleary was a member of the 523rd Tactical Fighter Squadron, Udorn Airfield, Thailand. On October 10, 1972, he was the pilot of a McDonnell Douglas Phantom II Fighter (F-4E) on a mission 5 miles south of Ron, Quang Binh Province, North Vietnam. His remains were recovered on October 7, 1994 and identified on February 25, 2002. His name is inscribed on the Courts of the Missing at the Honolulu Memorial.
