Brigadier General Coffee was a veteran of World War II. During the Korean War, he was the Professor of Ordnance at the United States Military Academy. On March 9, 1951, he was on temporary duty to West Germany, flying from Heidelberg to Bonn In an Army liaison aircraft when it crashed near Coblenz, killing him.
