USMA Class of 1948, Captain Coons was the pilot of a F-84E Thunderjet fighter with the 9th Fighter Bomber Squadron, 49th Fighter Bomber Group. On May 19, 1951, while on a combat mission near Kumhwa, North Korea, his aircraft was hit by anti-aircraft fire and crashed.
