Aviation Machinist's Mate (Jet), Second Class Coons was a member of Observation Squadron 67 located at the Nakhon Phanom Royal Thai Air Force Base, Thailand. On February 17, 1968, he was a crew member of a Lockheed Neptune Observation Patrol Aircraft (OP-2F) over Laos when the aircraft was hit by enemy fire and the starboard engine caught fire. His remains were recovered on March 30, 1993 and identified on December 1, 1993. His name is inscribed on the Courts of the Missing at the Honolulu Memorial.
