Captain Cooper was a member of the 346th Bomber Squadron, 307th Strategic Wing, Utapao Air Base, Thailand. On December 19, 1972, he was the navigator of a Boeing Stratofortress Bomber (B-52D) on a night bombing mission over Hanoi, North Vietnam. His bomber was shot down by surface to air missiles. His remains were recovered on March 5, 1996 and identified on August 12, 2003. His name is inscribed on the Courts of the Missing at the Honolulu Memorial.
