Staff Sergeant Copley was a member of the Military Assistance Command, Vietnam Studies and Observation Group, Command and Control North. On November 16, 1968, he was the assistant to the team leader on a reconnaissance patrol 16 miles inside Laos west of Ben Het and had been wounded. He was declared Missing in Action. His remains were not recovered. His name is inscribed on the Courts of the Missing at the Honolulu Memorial.
