Captain Cornwell was a member of the 555th Tactical Fighter Squadron, Udorn Air base, Thailand. On September 10, 1971, he was the radar intercept officer of a McDonnell Douglas Phantom II Fighter (F-4D) on a forward air control mission over the Plain of Jars, Laos, near Ban Ban in Xiangkhoang, where his aircraft crashed. His remains were recovered on August 31, 1994 and identified on March 7, 1996. His name is inscribed on the Courts of the Missing at the Honolulu Memorial.
