Staff Sergeant Cruz was a member of the 1st Air Commando Squadron, Pleiku, South Vietnam. On September 2, 1963, he was a crew member of a Douglas Invader Bomber (B-26B) on a mission over South Vietnam when radio contact was lost. His remains were recovered on March 27, 1992 and identified on October 10, 1996. His name is inscribed on the Courts of the Missing at the Honolulu Memorial.
