Captain Cuthbert was a member of the 13th Tactical Fighter Squadron, 432nd Tactical Reconnaissance Wing. On July 3, 1972, he was the pilot of a McDonnell Douglas Phantom II Fighter (F-4E) on a mission 70 miles northwest of Dong Hoi, North Vietnam, where his aircraft was shot down by hostile fire. His remains were recovered on September 13, 1990 and identified on December 17, 1990. His name is inscribed on the Courts of the Missing at the Honolulu Memorial.
