For his leadership and valor, Captain Darby was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross, the Air Medal with Oak Leaf Cluster, the Purple Heart, the Korean Service Medal, the United Nations Service Medal, the National Defense Service Medal, the Korean Presidential Unit Citation, the Republic of Korea War Service Medal and the World War II Victory Medal.
Notes
Captain Darby was a decorated veteran of World War II, as a crew member of a B-24 Liberator bomber. In Korea, he was the pilot of a LT-6G Mosquito control aircraft with the 6148th Tactical Air Control Squadron, 6147th Tactical Air Control Group. On October 24, 1952, after evaluating damage from a bombing raid, his aircraft was hit by ground fire and crashed.
