Lieutenant Day was a Navy and Coast Guard veteran of World War II. In Korea, he was assigned to the Coast Guard Station, Port Angeles, Washington. On January 20, 1954, he was the pilot of a Coast Guard HO4S helicopter on a training flight which crashed in the Port Angeles area killing him and four crewmembers.
