Colonel De Soto was a member of the 390th Tactical Fighter Squadron, Danang Air Base, South Vietnam. On April 12, 1969, he was the pilot of a McDonnell Douglas Phantom II Fighter (F-4D) on an operational mission a few miles north of the tri-border of Vietnam, Laos and Cambodia over Quang Nam Province, South Vietnam. Radio contact with the aircraft was lost. His remains were not recovered. His name is inscribed on the Courts of the Missing at the Honolulu Memorial.
