For his leadership and great valor, Master Sergeant Duke was awarded the Medal of Honor, the Purple Heart, the Combat Infantryman Badge, the Prisoner of War Medal, the Korean Service Medal, the United Nations Service Medal, the National Defense Service Medal, the Korean Presidential Unit Citation, the Republic of Korea War Service Medal and the World War II Victory Medal.
Notes
A veteran of World War II, Master Sergeant Duke was a member of Company C, 1st Battalion, 21st Infantry Regiment, 24th Infantry Division. He was seriously injured in Korea on March 7, 1951 and returned to duty on March 23, 1951. On April 26, 1951, when he learned that several of his men were isolated, he led a daring assault to recover the men. Although wounded by mortar fire, he directed his platoon's fire upon the advancing enemy. When forced to withdraw, he directed his men to leave him and go for safety. He was taken Prisoner of War and died while a prisoner on November 11, 1951.
