Commander Dunlop was a member of Attack Squadron 22, Carrier Air Wing 14 aboard the Aircraft Carrier USS CORAL SEA (CVA-43). On April 6, 1972, he was the pilot of a Vought Attack Aircraft Attack Corsair II (A-7E) on a mission over Dong Hoi, North Vietnam when his aircraft was hit by a surface to air missile and crashed. He ejected but was listed as missing. His remains were recovered on May 27, 2003 and identified on May 24, 2004. His name is inscribed on the Courts of the Missing at the Honolulu Memorial.
