Staff Sergeant Dye was a member of 57th Assault Helicopter Company, 52nd Aviation Battalion. On February 19, 1968, he was the engineer of a Bell Iroquois Utility Helicopter (UH-1H) on an emergency extraction over mission west of Dak Sur, Laos. As they picked up the team, the aircraft received heavy enemy fire, crashed and burned. His remains were recovered on November 21, 2007 and identified on February 4, 2009. His name is permanently inscribed on the Courts of the Missing at the Honolulu Memorial.
