Major East was a member of the 602nd Special Operations Squadron, Nakhom Phenom, Royal Thai Air Force Base. On April 26, 1969, he was the pilot of a Douglas Skyraider Attack Aircraft (A-1J) on a mission over Laos, when his aircraft was shot down. His remains were recovered on June 3, 1994 and identified on June 27, 1997. His name is inscribed on the Courts of the Missing at the Honolulu Memorial.
