Sergeant Major Echevarria was a member of Command and Control Detachment, 5th Special Forces Group. On October 3, 1966, he was leading a patrol that had been inserted into Laos near the border or South Vietnam just west of the Demilitarized Zone, when they came under intense enemy fire. Sergeant Major Echevarria was killed. His remains were not recovered. His name is inscribed on the Courts of the Missing at the Honolulu Memorial.
