For his leadership and valor, Captain Eklund was awarded the Bronze Star, the Army Commendation Ribbon, the Prisoner of War Medal, the Combat Medical Badge, the Korean Service Medal, the United Nations Service Medal, the National Defense Service Medal, the Korean Presidential Unit Citation and the Republic of Korea War Service Medal.

Captain Eklund was a medical officer with Company B, 1st Battalion, 9th Infantry Regiment, 2nd Infantry Division at Chonchon near Kunu-ri, North Korea. He was taken Prisoner of War while tending his wounded comrades on December 1, 1950 and died in captivity in a Death Valley near Pyoktong, North Korea on February 28, 1951 of malnutrition, dysentery and pneumonia. His remains were not recovered. His name is inscribed on the Courts of the Missing at the Honolulu Memorial.
