Warrant Officer, First Class Ellen was a member of 57th Aviation Company, 52nd Aviation Battalion, 17th Aviation Group. On April 24, 1972, he was the co-pilot of a Bell Iroquois Utility Helicopter (UH-1H) extracting American servicemen from Tanh Canh base camp, Kontum Province, South Vietnam. After takeoff the aircraft was hit by enemy fire, crashed and burned on a small island in the Dak Poko River. His remains were not recovered. His name is inscribed on the Courts of the Missing at the Honolulu Memorial.
