Staff Sergeant Ellis was a rifleman with Company A, 1st Battalion, 35th Infantry Regiment, 25th Infantry Division. On June 24, 1966, he was a member of group assisting the withdrawal of a reconnaissance team in Pleiku Province, South Vietnam. He was last seen rushing to a wounded soldier and listed as Missing in Action. His remains were not recovered. His name is inscribed on the Courts of the Missing at the Honolulu Memorial.
