Colonel Espenshied was a member of the 12th Tactical Fighter Wing. On October 21, 1969, he was the observer of a Cessna Skymaster Observation Aircraft (O-2A) on a mission over the juncture of Tuyen Duc, Ninh Thuan and Khanh Provinces in South Vietnam, when his aircraft was shot down by hostile fire. His remains were recovered on January 23, 1989 and identified on June 1, 1989. His name is inscribed on the Courts of the Missing at the Honolulu Memorial.
