Lieutenant Colonel Evert was a member of the 354th Tactical Fighter Squadron. On November 8, 1967, he was the pilot of a Thunderchief Fighter (F-105D) on a bombing mission of a railroad bridge northwest of Hanoi, North Vietnam. As his aircraft attacked the target it was hit by anti-aircraft fire and crashed. His remains were recovered on October 5, 2001 and identified on January 30, 2002. His name is permanently inscribed on the Courts of the Missing at the Honolulu Memorial.
