First Lieutenant Fain was the pilot of a F-84E Thunderjet fighter with the 430th Fighter-Bomber Squadron, 474th Fighter-Bomber Group. On February 8, 1953, while returning from a combat mission, his aircraft crashed into the sea six miles south of Kunsan Airfield (K-8), South Korea. His remains were not recovered. His name is inscribed on the Courts of the Missing at the Honolulu Memorial.
