Major Fanning was a member of the Marine All Weather Attack Squadron 242, Marine Air Group 11, 1st Marine Air Wing. On October 31, 1967, he was the pilot of a Grumman Attack Aircraft Intruder (A-6A) over North Vietnam on a night electronics support mission. Contact was lost when the aircraft was 15 east of Hanoi and he was declared missing. His remains were recovered on July 17, 1984 and identified on August 2, 1984. His name is inscribed on the Courts of the Missing at the Honolulu Memorial.
