Staff Sergeant Fitts was a member of the 5th Special Forces Group. On November 30, 1968, he was a passenger in a Sikorsky Choctaw Cargo Helicopter (CH34) over Laos at 4,000 feet when it was struck by a 37mm anti-aircraft fire, crashed and exploded. His remains were recovered on March 26, 1989 and identified on December 20, 1989. His name is permanently inscribed on the Courts of the Missing at the Honolulu Memorial.
