Colonel Franklin was a member of the 421st Tactical Fighter Squadron. On August 14, 1966, he was the pilot of a Thunderchief Fighter (F-105D) on a mission to bomb the mail link to China in North Vietnam. About 70 miles north of Hanoi, he ran into heavy surface to air missiles and his aircraft crashed. His remains were recovered on July 13, 1988 and identified on October 17, 1988. His name is inscribed on the Courts of the Missing at the Honolulu Memorial.
