Sergeant First Class Gallagher was a member of the 5th Special Forces Group. On January 5, 1968, he was a passenger in a Bell Iroquois Utility Helicopter (UH-1D) 20 miles inside Laos south of Lao Bao, when it came under 37mm anti-aircraft fire and crashed. His remains were recovered on March 15, 2002 and identified on November 13, 2006. His name is permanently inscribed on the Courts of the Missing at the Honolulu Memorial.
