Hospital Corpsman Third Class Garner was a member of Headquarters and Service Company 1st Battalion 1st Marine Division. On May 29, 1967, while on a search and destroy mission on a river patrol boat in South Vietnam, his boat came under fire and overturned. His remains were not recovered. His name is inscribed on the Courts of the Missing at the Honolulu Memorial.
