Sergeant Gassman was a member of the 5th Special Forces Group. On October 5, 1970, he was with a patrol about 12 miles inside Laos west of Ta Bat, when they were attacked by a hostile force, killing him. His remains were not recovered. His name is inscribed on the Courts of the Missing at the Honolulu Memorial.
