Captain Gauley was a member of the 34th Tactical Fighter Squadron. On January 10, 1967, he was the pilot of a Thunderchief Fighter (F-105D) on a mission over the Plain of Jars, Laos, when he was shot down. His remains were not recovered. His name is inscribed on the Courts of the Missing at the Honolulu Memorial.
