For his leadership and valor, Captain Gay was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross with Oak Leaf Cluster, the Air Medal with 4 Oak Leaf Clusters, the Korean Service Medal, the United Nations Service Medal, the National Defense Service Medal, the Korean Presidential Unit Citation and the Republic of Korea War Service Medal.

USMA Class of 1946, Captain Gay served with the 8th Fighter Bomber Squadron, 49th Fighter Bomber Group in Korea from 1951 to 1952, flying 102 missions. While serving as a pilot with the 58th Fighter Squadron he was killed in an aircraft accident in Massachusetts on August 10, 1952.
